Most of the time when I’m complimented by someone at work, I usually say that it’s my job and I try to be the best I can or that whatever extra little thing is a part of my job and I take it all as seriously as mixing the concerts. A few days ago Bill Kirchen came through and played an awesome show. Bill’s been touring for over 30 years with Comander Cody and by himself with hs own bands.
The drummer, Dave Elliot, was talking to be after the soundcheck and said “I’ve been doing this for well over 25 years and there have been less than a half a dozen soundguys that get it. You’re one of them.” What the hell do you say to that?
“Wow. Thanks.”
That’s what I said, because that’s one hell of a compliment. After the show Bill looked and me and said “Oh man! I forgot to thank you. You know why? Because usually I remember to thank the sound guy because I notice he’s there during the show. You were transparent and I forgot there even was a soundsystem.” That’s the ultimate compliment, because for the artists, I attempt to make it so the sound system is a natural extension of the band, not something they should notice. He also said this:
“You know how I know you did a god job? They liked us.”
