Recently Andrew Baron of Rocketboom laid some internet-smack on WebbAlert, Morgan Webb’s video show.

Webbalert may not be working because the show is not utilizing the medium properly (it’s trying to latch on to a formula and it’s not working it right) but also because it’s not adding any creative or authentic value, in my personal opinion. In discussions with my team at Rocketboom, I predicted the graph above because the show lacks creativity and authenticity and because its ineffective for a large portion of the audience it targets.

This is interesting, as there does seem to be a rush of formulaic daily video shows.

Cute Quirky Girl + Daily News = Success

It seems a bit like Baron is criticizing the genre of video blogs he helped create (note: he also lad into Wallstrip in his previous post), but there might be some truth to what he’s saying.

As an example, let’s compare Morgan Webb’s WebbAlert to a video created by Miranda July. You might say this comparison isn’t fair because Miranda has directed a movie and Morgan has hosts a video game review show on TV, but this is my comparison.

TechCrunch is also talking about this, making a long list of the female fronted shows. Check out their post Battle of the Podcasting Geek Chicks. Somehow RocketBoom isn’t on the list. Neither of Baron’s shows are on the list.
