Leeloo boundingSo last year on February 24th, Amber and I met a little beagle that needed a home. Being soft hearted, we agreed to make this little guy part of our family. The next day we found out that we were not going to be getting the beagle puppy. The family that was housing him couldn’t let him go, so we weren’t going to force them to give him up. I was sulking around the house for a little while after getting that phone call.

Around 11 am, Amber asked if I wanted to go down to the local dog shelter. She knew that I was pretty upset about not getting a new dog. At first I said I didn’t want to look for another dog, but then I yelled out “we’ll leave in 25 minutes. No guarantees.”

We went to the Connecticut SPCA in Monroe, CT and didn’t really see any dogs that we fell in love with. We were told there were smaller dogs available, but they were shy. In a similar story to how I adopted Matty, we went upstairs and saw a few crates with quiet dogs. One was a blond lab and she was calmly asleep, the other was some kinda brown and black dog that couldn’t have been over 20 lbs. I thought that we should see the blond one, because she was sleeping and quiet (that’s my rule about adopting dogs: they have to be quiet and calm in the shelter).

We introduced her to Matty before we agreed. They took one look at each other and didn’t really move much. She walked over and gave him a little kiss on his nose and we knew right then and there this was our dog. On our way home, we renamed her Leeloo Dallas.

This is a photo of her from the first few hours we had her. She was timid, scared out of her mind and thirsty.

Leeloo, day 1

She’s our little lady and I cherish the year that we’ve had so far.

While on vacation in Puerto Rico we came across a dog who was yelping for attention. He was hidden under a truck behind the bathrooms of a local beach.

This is where Amber’s heart came in. Over the course of the next two days, she made sure he was rescued and got medical attention. He was hanging out under that truck because he had a broken spine. He recovered from surgery pretty quickly and was playing and having fun in no time. He had a few set backs (ringworm and kennel cough), but came through.

It’s been about two weeks since he’s come home to us and I couldn’t be happier that we saved him. He was on the beach with no food or water for four to five days before we came across him. I’m amazed that he was still alive and crying for help. It was only after ten minutes of interaction with him before Amber’s heart was locked on bringing this dog home.

Before we even knew he was going to be okay, she told me she wanted to name him Tino. She knew that I wanted a dog named Tino for a while now, because I wanted my next male dog after Mattingly to be named Tino.

We can’t thank Manos por Patas enough for their guidance and help. I suggest that anyone who wants a dog seriously consider adopting a dog from Puerto Rico.

Our Puerto Rican dogs Leeloo Dallas and Tino Martinez Rocco have been wonderful additions to our home.

That lost dog we found last week?

His people came and got him from the shelter! He’s home and safe now!

August 29th, on the corner of Old Town Road and Sylvan Ave on the Trumbull / Bridgeport line. Please someone claim that this dog is yours.

So on our way home from the dog park we saw a little beagle on the side of the road. He was sniffing around in a dangerous area for dogs to be loose in. Since Amber and I are dog lovers, and we would hate the idea of one of our two kids going missing, we went to go help. Amber put the dogs in our house and grabbed a leash to help bring this guy somewhere safe.

He was good on a leash and had marks on his neck showing that he recently was wearing a leash. We called everyone we could think of that could help us, but we wound up taking him to the Trumbull Animal Control Shelter. They don’t kill dogs unless they’re hostile (which he’s not), if they bite (which he probably will not) or if they’re full (they were not). They keep him for nine days for someone to claim him. If not, then he goes up for adoption. Which I might have to fight Amber on, as he got into a little tiff with Leeloo. Anyway, here’s some photos of the cute guy.

Less info on the Craigslist posting. Found a dog on Bridgeport/Trumbull border. Maybe this will help bump it up on Google. Who knows. I’ll keep you updated.
