What Kind of Hotel is Your Blog?
by Rob Blatt
Last December I went on a family vacation Puerto Rico and stayed at a resort hotel, which got me thinking about websites and content. Before I rant about anything, I just want to state that I had oodles of fun and really enjoyed myself.
The El Conquistador had a private beach, a water park, a casino, restaurants, pools, bars, a nightclub and a convention space. It was overwhelming. There was all of this space, and so much of it seemed empty to me. The nightclub was empty every night, but they were still playing the music as loud as possible to try and attract people. Their guests just weren’t the nightclub type. The average guest was older, or part of an extended family. Not the booty shaking crowd. The restaurants were managed by the hotel, not independantly, and suffered because of it with inexperienced waitstaff and poor service. This got me thinking about blogs and websites.
What kind of hotel is your site? Do you have many topics that have little to no content, like the El Conquistador? Holiday Inn Express gives you a room and continental breakfast and promises nothing, but occasionally comes up with something extra like a pool. The W Hotel will give anything you want for the right price. I know that my site is similar to a motel. I have blog posts and very little else on the site. A site like Smashing Magazine contains more content in a different fashion, and perhaps is a Marriott, offering a pool, gym and room service on top of a room. Savvy Auntie has a mall attached to her hotel.
Take a look at your site, see where the people aren’t going and figure out if you should beef up your services in that department, or perhaps it’s time to discontinue a service you provide in order to focus on what you’re good at.
