Why I value e-mail so damn much
by Rob Blatt
When anyone writes e-mail, it means they are putting forward an effort. Even if they are just confirming movie times with their wife, it means that they care enough to put forth the effort. I’ve spoken about this before in the posts: Honesty From EntreCard, Where Pandora Stops Being A Group Of People To Me and Personal Attention From Pandora FTW. If you look in the comments of those posts, you’ll see comments from people from EntreCard and Pandora, which means they care too, and that’s awesome.
Recently, Jason Calacanis (

Official announcement regarding my retirement from blogging. He sent out his first e-mail newsletter earlier today and it connected with me. He spoke a bit about Gawker, a topic that he and I agree on, and about why he went to the e-mail format. No mention of the NYKnicks, but it’s been a painful few years, so I can understand that. I sent an e-mail out to him supporting his decision to stop blogging and go the way he did. Five minutes later I got a response to my e-mail that was quick and to the point, but it was still obvious that he read my e-mail. Five. Minutes. Later.
What was amazing to me is that the tone of my e-mail didn’t warrant a response, but he sent one anyway. It’s going that little extra distance on his part that gets me more engaged in his message and his e-mails. It’s that tiny bit of effort that I can appreciate from Jason, Pandora and EntreCard that makes me loyal to those names.
